Save Our History

The Caldwell County Historical Society in Princeton, Kentucky, received a $10,000 Save Our History grant from the History Channel to help restore and preserve a historical 1926 one-room African-American school in the rural community of Fredonia, Kentucky. In partnership with local students from the Caldwell County School System and the Fredonia Heritage Committee, the Caldwell County Historical Society’s project focused on researching, documenting, restoring, preserving and creating a permanent educational and historical resource from one of two remaining African-American schools in the county. Students from all grade levels and across the four county schools were involved in the physical restoration of the building under the guidance of the Kentucky Heritage Council, as well as the collection of oral histories, the making of a documentary film about the site including a reenactment, and the creation of exhibits and brochures about the historical site.
