The 2010 World Equestrian Legacy

At the culmination of the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games, FEI President, HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, made the statement that horses unify people, bringing divergent cultures and heritages together--an observation with which most Kentuckians would readily agree.  After all, in many areas of Kentucky, horses are as much a part of living as breathing itself.

Kentuckians believe that Kentucky is the horse capital of the world. The 2010 World Equestrian Legacy is a six-part miniseries that explores and celebrates the unique, unshakeable bond between the equine and this state.  Each thirty-minute segment will explore Kentucky along with the horse’s relationship to the landscape, history, people, places, arts, culture and music of the state. The segments will tell of their intertwining history and transformational relationship. This series will delve into the past as well as shine a light on the state’s present and future as it travels the path from the importance of horses in Kentucky’s history to the planning, preparing and hosting of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games to the legacy that the Games will leave for future generations.

The 2010 World Equestrian Legacy
will be a dramatic, impressive story told through archival footage and photographs, incredible cinematography, and fascinating stories from both young and old.  Rather than talking at its audience, this miniseries will talk with and to the people of Kentucky and, in the process, the entire world. Using interviews, personal stories, anecdotes, history, and legends, the tale of how the horse transitioned from a utilitarian animal to something far more pivotal will be brought to life. Rather than use broad, sterile strokes, we will tell these stories on a far more intimate basis–one story at a time, one experience at a time, one astonishing and often heart-touching revelation at a time, complete with original music score!

Of course, a topic such as this lends itself to breathtaking footage. Rest assured, the striking images of Kentucky and its rolling horse farms; the majestic beauty of the horse; the rich characters, including horse aficionados from the United States as well as Europe; the historians and artists; and most importantly, Kentuckians will be the stars of the show.  Our project is their stories.

We envision speaking to a wide range of individuals--from royalty to heads of state; from organizers to breeders, owners, groomers and jockeys; from 4-H members to inner city children participating in the Mustang Troop; from noted artists and craftsman to farmers, coal miners, and yes, even moonshiners.

We will also employ a full range of archival footage and photographs, including the numerous African American jockeys who initially dominated the Kentucky Derby and the women in horse history, as well as interviews with descendents of historically significant figures and multigenerational horse families. Through these stories and experiences, we will probe the relationship between the African American culture and the horse. We will reveal the equine’s impact on art and music, as well as mention industry and commerce. We will showcase a wide assortment of horses--from thoroughbreds to Shetland ponies, from esteemed winners to grand old legends. Through it all we will reveal how Kentucky’s history and that of the horse are woven together into a magnificent multi-cultural, multi-hued, multi-dimensional tapestry.

In weaving this tapestry we will elevate horse sport itself. This project will showcase the sheer joy horse riding brings to all ages and all skills, explore the science and business of breeding, and visit such legendary tracks as Churchill Downs and Keeneland. The hallmark, of course, will be The Kentucky Legacy , a legacy that continues after the fanfare from the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games has subsided, Kentucky’s company has gone home, and horses have returned to familiar pastures.

Throughout the production of The 2010 World Equestrian Legacy, another, perhaps equally important legacy, is beginning to unfold. In partnership with students and teachers across the state of Kentucky, Marvo Entertainment Group is capturing the creativity, enthusiasm, and technology expertise of Kentucky’s best and brightest by providing exciting opportunities for students to make significant contributions to this documentary miniseries.  As we work together with Kentucky’s Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) and the Kentucky Department of Education, we are insuring that both students and educators are an integral part of this Kentucky story that is being told.  Students are being utilized in research, creative and technical writing, videography, photography, interview experiences, and website design.  Inclusion of this educational component in The 2010 World Equestrian Legacy highlights our Marvo team’s commitment to the young people of Kentucky. As student work is showcased and viewed not only by Kentuckians but also by the world, these students will be leaving a legacy for the future—a legacy of educational achievements beyond the classroom.

This project is indeed a tribute to relationships, humanity, and Kentucky itself. The 2010 World Equestrian Legacy is a rich one. It celebrates this state’s history and future, its enduring spirit and incredible ingenuity, and its unique people and their heartfelt and age-old devotion to all things equine. This project also serves as a way to gain the world’s attention; change misperceptions; and, through the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, showcase Kentucky as a state capable of playing on the international stage.

Long after the closing ceremonies are over, this miniseries will continue the work of the 2010 Games-- “Welcoming the world as only Kentuckians can--with grace, style, character and a healthy dose of horse sense coupled with Southern charm.”
